Rehab Group Chief Executive elected as President of the European Platform for Rehabilitation
05 January 2011
Angela Kerins, Chief Executive of the Rehab Group, has been elected President of the European Platform for Rehabilitation (EPR), a European-wide network of leading providers of services to people with disabilities and others who are disadvantaged. Ms Kerins is the first woman to hold this position. The EPR has a seat on the EU's High Level Group on Disability and has participatory status with the Council of Europe.
“Social innovation is the cornerstone of the not-for-profit sector and over many decades this sector, through its many member organisations across the globe, has spearheaded societal change and achieved pioneering successes. Social innovation is now more important than ever and we must do all that we can to encourage and drive progress. When a large number of people are energised, things happen. It is our responsibility not only to ensure that our people are energised but that what they produce makes a real difference to people’s lives.”
Jan Spooren, Secretary General of the EPR, added, “The Rehab Group is recognised in Europe as an organisation which delivers and supports innovative and best practice services. I look forward to working even more closely with Angela, during her term of office as President, in furthering the work of EPR and in driving the quality of service provision across Europe. Through a wide range of activities which involve the expertise of its members, EPR intends to lead innovation and change in a rights-based and market-driven environment, focusing on service development and quality.”
Ms Kerins was appointed Chief Executive of Rehab Group in 2006. The organisation had a turnover of in excess of €191 million in 2010, has over 3,500 staff and provides services to over 43,000 people and their families each year. Rehab Group works both nationally and internationally for change in the area of disability and disadvantage and has consultative status at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, to which Ms Kerins is Rehab Group’s permanent representative.
Within Ireland, Poland and The Netherlands, Rehab Group’s services are provided by RehabCare, Rehab Enterprises and National Learning Network. In England and Scotland, these activities are principally provided through TBG Learning, Momentum and The Chaseley Trust.
Between 1999 and 2009, Ms Kerins was Chairperson of the National Disability Authority and she is currently Chairperson of the Equality Authority. Ms Kerins is also a member of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) and serves on the National Council of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC). In 2003, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws (LLD) by the National University of Ireland, University College Dublin for her contribution to the disability sector.
